Dr. Arthur may recommend the use of Botox or Xeomin to reduce muscle tension in the jaw, a common cause of TMJ disorders and discomfort. Just as with fine lines and wrinkles, the neurotoxin in these products works to prevent muscle contractions where injections are placed, allowing the muscles to relax. The result is less pain and the renewed ability for the jaw to sit in a natural position.
Dr. Arthur can use Botox or Xeomin to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging that appear around the eyes, nose, and mouth as a positive side effect of its therapeutic uses. Injected under the skin, Botox and Xeomin are FDA-approved denatured protein compounds that contain botulinum toxin type A, the only difference being that Xeomin does not contain certain additives for preservation that can sometimes present an allergy risk.
Botox and Xeomin act on the nerves that stimulate muscle contraction. Visible fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and those frown lines between the brows can be caused by underlying muscle tension. Once relaxed by the injection of Botox or Xeomin, the skin will soften and appear smoother.

Botox and Xeomin injections typically last around 3 months, making it easy to receive additional treatment when you visit us for routine dental care which is recommended every 6 months.
Am I a candidate for using Botox to treat jaw pain?
Dr. Arthur always discusses your dental and overall health, including medical history. She will take the time to thoroughly evaluate your jaw joints before recommending treatment for TMJ symptoms with Botox injections.
Does insurance cover Botox when used for TMJ?
Dental insurance will not cover the cost of Botox when treating TMJ. Our front desk will provide cost details for your consideration.
Will Botox lead to a frozen face?
Despite the many misconceptions surrounding Botox, once you receive the injections you will not get a “frozen face”. Botox will simply relax the muscles at the injection sites. You will still be capable of making a full range of facial expressions! Our dentists have been thoroughly trained to correctly inject Botox for various treatments.
